Sloth

In regards to the blog, one could say I have been indolent.  Speaking of sloth, I saw one recently.  We were in Costa Rica earlier this month and encountered it during a rain forest tour.  At various times, we also saw a heron and other birds, a caiman, monkeys, butterflies and some interesting lizards and frogs.  You’ve probably seen some of the pics on Facebook.  If not, you are not very well connected.

After a night in San Jose, we started the tour in La Fortuna, near the Arenal Volcano.   We stayed at the Mountain Paradise.  The food and accommodations were good and the pool was unnecessarily heated.  Along for the trip were Unc and his wife and our pals from Marin, two of Fairfax’s finest citizens.

One day I was left to my own devices as the rest of the team went on a long hike.  I spent most of the day reading my book, This Hallowed Ground.  Did I ever mention I was one course shy of a history major?  I may have sipped an Imperial or two as well.

Another day the wife and I broke off to go zip lining.  That was some wild, weird stuff.  This compared favorably to my other zip line experience in Hawaii.  I enjoyed that one as well but the ones in Costa Rica actually had brakes.  Plus we had about twice as many lines and a Tarzan swing that caused everyone to scream.

The next stop was Dreams Las Mareas, a Club Med type all inclusive.  We traveled several hours to get there, including about 10 miles of rocky, bumpy road at the end.  Unc came up with a new unit of measurement.  Five miles of bad road = one DJ.

The food at this joint was very good and we took full advantage of it.  They had an Asian restaurant which I was sure would be terrible.  I was quite wrong.  We went there twice and made pigs of ourselves.  Why order one appetizer and entrée per person when you can order multiples.  We also did Italian as well as the all you can eat buffet.  The only real peeve we had was what they were pouring out of the Tanqueray bottle at the bar.  Sometimes the martinis were good and sometimes quite suspect.

The highlight of the trip was an all day tour of Nicaragua.  We saw the towns of Rivas and Granada, with a pedicycle tour of the former.  This was our tour guide’s home town. We saw an active volcano and a dormant one.  During our Lake Nicaragua junket, our guide lured a monkey and its kid onto our boat with some avocado.

So that is all I have on the getaway.  As mentioned, I have been quite slothful and did not take any notes.  Give me a call if you have any questions.

Another reason there have been no posts lately is that my PC croaked.  I have to buy a new one and hopefully I can pull all the data off the old one.  About 500 originals from the blog and about 20 years of Christmas letters, along with pics and other stuff, are riding on that.

On the home front, we had The Exec and Mrs. #2 over for dinner this week.  Their spouses along with the TCGs were up hiking in Yosemite.  This is a continuation of Peru’s Watchers and Eaters vs. Trekkers theme. The trek just wrapped yesterday so we are looking forward to hearing the tales.  And last night was a trip into The City for dinner at Lulu’s with a college friend of my wife. Some unorthodox driving was required to avoid ballpark traffic.  We chowed down and the Giants beat the As 9-3.
